Create a Healthier Worksite Culture

Complete 2 or more of the following 7 items:

1.  Join or Begin a Worksite Wellness Team: Find out if one already exists in your office and ask if you can help with a program or project in the coming months. If no group exists, see if there is any interest in starting a worksite wellness team to begin creating a workplace environment that encourages healthy lifestyles. Resources for creating a Worksite Wellness Team.
2.  Set up a free Fit City Worksite Wellness Assessment: If your business is located in Mecklenburg County and you have at least 100 employees, contact the Fit City Worksite Wellness Coordinator for a free worksite assessment. If you have less than 100 employees, download the self-assessment and complete the survey (with your worksite wellness team or a supervisor) to help determine where your work environment might hinder healthy lifestyles.
3.  Designate an Outdoor Eating Area as Smoke Free: Having a place to get outside and enjoy a quiet lunch is important in helping reduce stress, but many outdoor spaces are used by smokers during breaks and lunchtime. Talk to management about designating some if not all outdoor areas as smoke free. Learn more about creating Smoke free environments.
4.  Create a Worksite Wellness Bulletin Board: Keeping employees informed of opportunities to be active and eat right can help to change the workplace culture related to wellness. Work with your worksite wellness team or supervisor(s) to designate a permanent area to post information on walking groups, company sports teams, healthy recipes or smoking cessation information, and more. You may download a sample board with all the attached documents on the Fit City Worksite Wellness site.
5.  Post "Point of Decision Prompt" Signage: Help employees make healthier routine choices. Post "Take the Stairs" signs at elevators and stairwells, or Drink Water signs near vending machines and water fountains, or work with cafeteria manager to post healthy options. Get your employer's permission to post.
6.  Join the Fit City Challenge: Track your physical activity and fruits and vegetable consumption for at least one month of the challenge using the Fit City Tracking Tool at www.FitCityChallenge.org. If you’re already a member and have been inactive, track your physical activity and fruits and veggies for one month of the challenge. If you’re already an active member, get a friend to join.
7.  Ask your employer to officially promote the Fit City Challenge among employees. Many worksites use this program to reward employees for engaging in healthy behaviors. We can customize the challenge to meet your company's specific needs. Learn more.
