Feature Article: Community Gardens

The Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department is offering community garden sites at seven parks this year, just in time for the upcoming growing season.

If you want a vegetable garden, or even a flower garden, but have no room for one because you live in an apartment, condominium or a restricted neighborhood, a community garden may be your answer. This program is open to any resident of Mecklenburg County. Grow food for yourself or donate it to a food bank.

These 10-foot x 10-foot community garden plots are suitable for growing tomatoes, squash, green beans, herbs, and many other vegetables and flowers. The soil has already been tilled and amended with compost. The plots are ready for spring planting. Water is available at each location. Each plot rents for $10 a season.

Community gardens have been established at the following locations:

  • Baxter St. Park, 1000 Baxter Street
  • McAlpine Creek Park, 8711 Monroe Road
  • Little Sugar Creek Greenway Park, Alexander Street at 17th Street
  • Ramsey Creek Park, 18441 Nantz Road, Cornelius
  • Thomas McAllister Winget Park, 12025 Winget Road
  • Reedy Creek Park, 2900 Rocky River Road
  • Huntingtowne Farms Park, 2400 Ramblewood Lane

For more information, call N.C. Cooperative Extension Agent Jim Monroe at 704-336-4006 or visit the Park & Rec website.
