Program/Service: Mini Chefs Healthy Cooking
Provider: Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department
Description:
 
A fun, interactive, healthy cooking class designed for kids! Class is conducted once a month at the Mallard Creek Recreation Center. Class is open to the public but registration is required.
Target Audience: Children ages 2-5 and their parents.

Color Me Healthy
Provider: Mecklenburg County Health Department
Description:
 
A nutrition and physical activity curriculum developed by NC Cooperative Extension at NC State University for use in childcare facilities and preschools. Early Childhood Educators trained in the program receive a toolkit providing 8 lessons and materials teaching children that eating fruits and vegetables in a rainbow of colors can be lots of fun!

Families Eating Smart and Moving More
Provider: Mecklenburg County Health Department
Description:
 
A 4-series class teaching families the skills to be able to eat more meals at home, eat healthy when eating out, move more in their everyday routine and watch less television.

School Nutrition Services
Provider: Mecklenburg County Health Department
Description:
 
Individual nutrition counseling and case management is provided to students and families referred or identified appropriate for service. Counseling is conducted by Registered Dietitians at the child’s school.

Program/Service:

Body Works Program
Provider: Mecklenburg County Health Department
Description:
 
A 5-week weight management program helping teens develop healthier nutrition habits, active lifestyles and better communication skills. The program is implemented in various middle schools, high schools and at the Mecklenburg County Health Department.
Target Audience: Young Adults ages 11-18

Program/Service:

Total Body Program
Provider: Mecklenburg County Health Department
Description:

 

Total Body Health Club is for teens interested in improving their health. The program is a peer mediated support group promoting positive health and wellness behavior change. The club meets once a week for an hour for approximately 2 months. The club is directed by teens and a school health advisor. The program is implemented in various high schools.
Target Audience: Young Adults ages 14-18

Girls On the Run
Provider: Girls on the Run
Description:

 

GOTR is a character development program that uses running as a tool to educate and prepare girls in 3rd - 8th grade, for a lifetime of healthy living and self-respect. The goals of the programs are to encourage positive emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical development in girls ages eight to thirteen. Program/Service: Mecklenburg County Community Gardens
Provider: Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department
Description: Six designated park sites provide 10 foot x 10 foot plots for individuals to rent as their own garden space. The soil has already been tilled, limed, and amended with compost. Water is available at most locations.

5 A Day Program and Coalition
Provider: Mecklenburg County Health Department
Description:

 

The mission of the 5 A Day Coalition is to better the health of all county residents by increasing their fruit and vegetable consumption to 5 or more servings each day. The Coalition follows a detailed action plan to increase access to fresh produce and to educate the community about the benefits of eating fruits and vegetables.

Body and Soul: Celebration of Healthy Eating and Living
Provider: Mecklenburg County Health Department
Description: Body and Soul is a train-the-trainer program designed for churches in the African-American community. The Program provides guidance on how to establish a Wellness Committee or Health Ministry and tips and ideas on how to increase the congregation’s fruit and vegetable intake.

African-American Churches Eating Smart and Moving More
Provider: Mecklenburg County Health Department
Description: This program is similar to the Body and Soul Program, however, focuses on general healthy eating where Body and Soul focuses specifically on fruit and vegetable intake. The Program provides guidance on how to establish a Wellness Committee or Health Ministry and tips and ideas on how to create a healthy eating church environment.
